【Hanamaki, Iwate】Marukan Building Grand Dining Lounge

Marukan Building Grand Dining Lounge is a Showa-era retro-style cafeteria famous for its 10-tier rolled soft-serve ice cream, as well as its other set menus and Western-style dishes.

About: Marukan Building Grand Dining Lounge

The Marukan Building Grand Dining Lounge was once located inside Marukan Department Store, which faced the threat of closure due to the aging of the building. However, when local residents learned of the situation, they took action to preserve the cafeteria in its original form. Thanks to their efforts, the Marukan Building has been revived and continues to operate in its current form.

Located in the heart of Hanamaki City’s central shopping district, the Marukan Building is a beloved spot for both locals and tourists. It houses not only a large cafeteria but also the Hanamaki City Toy Museum, a skateboard park, and other facilities. While the department store has evolved from its original form, it continues to play a vital role in supporting the vibrant activity at the center of Hanamaki City.

Highlights:

Upon exiting the elevator, you’ll find a large cafeteria with a Showa-era atmosphere. The food samples in the showcases, as well as the tables, chairs, and other furnishings, were all inherited from the former Marukan Department Store.

The 10-tier rolled soft-serve ice cream is especially famous here, standing about 25 cm tall—so large that it’s eaten with chopsticks. Other menu items, like ‘Marukan Ramen’ and ‘Neapolitan Katsu,’ remain from the past and continue to attract many local customers.

The spacious restaurant has about 580 seats available, but with so many seats, it is still recommended to choose the right time of day, as the restaurant is often full during busy hours.
