【Morioka, Iwate】Morioka Castle Ruins Park

Morioka Castle Ruins Park is a community-based park in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, where visitors can enjoy the lush greenery and natural beauty of the four seasons. Ideal for strolls and picnics, this park is a favorite among both locals and tourists.

About: Morioka Castle Ruins Park

Morioka Castle Ruins Park is located on the former site of Morioka Castle and is popular for its historical background and natural beauty. Morioka Castle, also known as Kozukata Castle, was the residence of the feudal lord but fell into disrepair and was mostly destroyed around 1874. In 1906, Iwate Prefecture began to develop the area around the ruins of the castle into a park, which was later designated as a national historic site for its beautiful stone walls in the Tohoku region.

In particular, the castle walls and moat remain are partially preserved up to the point where the scale and structure of the castle in the past can be recalled. This park is also worth visiting in all four seasons, as the cherry blossoms bloom beautifully in spring and the autumn leaves color the park in fall.

Highlights:

A great way to spend time at Morioka Castle Ruins Park is by enjoying a leisurely stroll. During the cherry blossom season in spring and the fall foliage season, you can walk through and take in the vibrant scenery. The park also features a spacious lawn area, perfect for a relaxing picnic with family and friends. Why not sit near the castle walls and immerse yourself in the history of the city while reading a book?
