【Morioka, Iwate】Iwate Bank Red Brick Building

The Iwate Bank Red Brick Building, as its name suggests, is a distinctive red brick building located in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. Once used as a bank, the building now attracts many tourists with its beautiful architecture.

About: Iwate Bank Red Brick Building

The charm of the Iwate Bank Red Brick Building lies in its value as a historical building. Built in the Meiji era (1868-1912) as the head office building of the Bank of Morioka, the building is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, and its unique red brick exterior leaves a deep impression on visitors. The interior retains a stately structure that evokes the functionality of the bank in the past, creating a space that gives off a sense of history.

This building was designed by Kingo Tatsuno and Manji Kasai, both renowned for their work on Tokyo Station. Its high ceilings and open layout are characteristic of the Western-style architecture of that era.

Highlights:

When visiting the Iwate Bank Red Brick Pavilion, take your time to stroll around the building. Try paying attention to the red brick walls and elaborate decorative details. It will give you a sense of the high level of architectural technology back then. The interior is divided into the Iwate Bank Zone (free of charge) and the Morioka Bank Zone (charged), and we encourage you to look around both. In the Morioka Bank Zone, visitors can admire the interior of the bank’s reception room and executive offices, which have been recreated exactly as they were when the bank first opened.

Art exhibits and events are regularly held inside, so it is recommended to check the schedule before visiting. Spend your time to your heart’s content in a space where past and present cultures merge.
