Aizu Sazae-do is a unique, three-story building on Iimori Mountain in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. Built in 1796, it stands 16.5 meters tall. The building is officially called “Entsu Sansodo-Do” and is also known as “Old Shoso-ji Sansodo-Do,” a designated Important Cultural Property.
Designed by the priest Ikudo, the building has a double spiral ramp that houses statues of the 33 Kannon of Saigoku. Visitors can walk through the hall and see all the Kannon images without crossing paths with others. Its unusual design, which allows for a smooth flow of visitors, led to its recognition as an Important Cultural Property in 1996.

Iimoriyama
Iimoriyama is a small mountain overlooking Aizu, with deep historical significance tied to the Byakkotai, a group of young samurai. After their defeat in the Battle of Tonokuchihara on August 23, 1868, they mistakenly believed Tsurugajo Castle had fallen and tragically committed suicide. The graves of 19 Byakkotai warriors and other fallen soldiers are still on the mountain.
Visitors can use a “moving slope” to reach the top instead of climbing steep stone steps. Nearby, you’ll also find Aizu Sazae-do and souvenir shops, making it a peaceful spot to reflect on history.
