About:Odawara Castle

Construction of Odawara Castle is believed to have started in the mid-15th century. Serving as the residence of the Hojo clan, it gradually expanded into a massive fortress. Renowned as the strongest castle of the Sengoku period, it featured formidable defensive structures and earned its reputation as an impregnable stronghold.

In 1960, the main keep of Odawara Castle was reconstructed to mark the 20th anniversary of Odawara City. Since then, the castle has become a prominent historical landmark. As you approach the castle from Odawara Station, you’ll cross over Manabi (learning) Bridge, which was historically used by elementary students as their school commute bridge.

The castle grounds are accessible through several gates, with Akagane Gate serving as the main entrance to the Ninomaru Bailey. This gate, beautifully adorned with copper plates, is also known as Wataru Yagura Gate, and it’s a significant feature of the castle’s architecture, making it a must-see during your visit.

Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine

Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine, located within the Odawara Castle Ruins Park, is dedicated to Ninomiya Sontoku (also known as Kinjiro), the inspirational figure depicted in the famous statue of a boy reading a book while carrying firewood. This shrine, which embodies Sontoku’s values of diligence and education, is a serene and meaningful destination. The shrine grounds also feature restaurants, cafes, and a wedding venue, making it a versatile spot for visitors seeking a peaceful retreat, a meal, or a memorable event.

Kinjiro Café

This café, located on the grounds of Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine, was established to honor the legacy of Ninomiya Sontoku, the shrine’s enshrined deity. In addition to a selection of coffee and beverages, the café offers traditional dishes like Go-jiru (soybean soup), which was a meal that Kinjiro himself often ate.
